Marrakech Food Tour: What to Expect
This Marrakech food tour immerses you in the rich culinary heritage of the city. It’s more than just tasting food it’s about understanding Moroccan culture through its flavors, traditions, and shared experiences.
This tour takes you through the vibrant backstreets and hidden gems of Marrakech. You’ll sample authentic and traditional dishes while learning about the methods used to prepare and preserve food. Discover how Morocco’s famous spices are combined to create the unforgettable tastes and aromas that define its cuisine.
Moroccan meals emphasize community and togetherness. Sharing food from a single plate with family, friends, or relatives is central to the culture, fostering gratitude, warmth, and connection.
Starting Point
We begin at Café L’Adresse, near Jemaa el-Fnaa square.
Stop 1: Tanjia – The Iconic Dish of Marrakech
Our first tasting introduces you to Tanjia, a beloved local dish slow-cooked in an earthenware pot. Known as the “wife of the Tagine,” Tanjia embodies the rich traditions of Marrakech cuisine. We’ll explore the preparation of roasted lamb and the cultural significance of this dish.
Stop 2: Authentic Moroccan Couscous
Next, we taste traditional Moroccan couscous, a dish made with steamed semolina topped with vegetables and meat. It’s a staple of Moroccan households and a must-try on any food tour.
Visit to the Ferran and Fernatchi
We’ll visit a ferran (community oven) and a fernatchi (an oven that heats the steam bath, usually located behind it). These communal spaces showcase how Marrakchis use shared facilities for cooking dishes like Tanjia, which is slow-cooked on wood ashes.
Additional Stops
The tour includes two smaller stops to sample more hidden culinary gems, offering a full spectrum of Marrakech’s food culture.
Final Stop: Rooftop Tea at Jemaa el-Fnaa
The tour concludes on a rooftop terrace overlooking the lively Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Enjoy a refreshing cup of Moroccan mint tea while soaking in the sights and sounds of the square—music, chants, and the enticing aromas of street food.
